Akihiko Paul Isohata joins Nishimura & Asahi

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Akihiko Paul Isohata, an executive officer of Japan Post Co., Ltd. until March 2021 and successively having held General Counsel positions at Japan Post Bank, Nidec Corporation and Japan Post Co., Ltd.,joined Nishimura & Asahi as Counsel on May 6, 2021.

He began his career as an attorney in 1995 practicing lender liability mass actions, loan recovery actions (e.g. the bulk sale of non-performing loans, enforcement of mortgages, bankruptcy and business turnarounds) and complex real property dispute resolution representing Japanese leading Banks and Trust Banks. He worked at a US law firm covering energy transactions, including M&A deals and LNG terminal acquisitions. After his return to Japan with the Brazilian Petroleum company, one of the firm’s biggest clients, which acquired a refinery in Japan, he also worked across various sustainable energy sectors (e.g. wind power, hydrogen and ethanol). He joined Japan Post Bank as the founding General Counsel in 2011, soon after its privatization, to establish the Legal Department, where he developed effective legal risk operation systems and supported the Bank to become listed. In 2019, he assumed offices as executive officer at Japan Post Co., Ltd. in charge of the Legal Division as General Counsel and the newly-established Insurance Solicitation Management and Control Office as General Manager.

He is expected to make a significant contribution to our finance, crisis management and dispute resolution practices using his extensive experience in retail banking, insurance, risk management and dispute resolution.
