Pro bono work to develop a medical app for parents
Leading Japanese law firm Nishimura & Asahi provided pro bono assistance to Child Tech Initiatives, a Japanese general incorporated association that has developed an app, Tossa no Ikuji, for use by general users (non-medical professionals).
Tossa no Ikuji was developed to help parents deal with emergency health issues that their children may encounter. Tossa no Ikuji provides guidance on the actions to take, including guidance on whether an immediate medical examination for the child is required or not. The guidance is based on emergency health guidebooks published by the medical association or each prefecture.
Tossa no Ikuji is listed as an example in “Basic Knowledge of the Development of Equipment and Software that Supports Self-care” published by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, a Japanese research facility and an independent administrative institution under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (“METI”).
Our pro bono work included advising Child Tech Initiatives about Japan’s Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act and Medical Practitioners' Act, as well as acting as the liaison with METI and other government agencies.

Mariko has strong expertise in pharmaceutical industry-focused practices, and she has advised on regulations, compliance, M&A, licensing, etc. She has also been involved in crisis management third-party investigation committees, and gave advice based on her extensive experience and knowledge acquired from her experience as one of the board members and management team of several pharmaceutical companies. She takes a leadership role as a core member of our firm’s D&I Promotion.
Takeshi has handled many complex M&A transactions and provides sincere advice to his clients. He has extensive experience in M&A-related disputes, and is well versed in the various issues facing companies with founding family shareholders. In recent years, he has been involved in many cases involving business and human rights, impact investing, and advises companies from the perspective of sustainability. He is also actively involved in pro bono work and is one of the most experienced in Japan.
