Eiichiro YAMASAKI

In his career as a judge, Eiichiro handled mainly civil cases in the Tokyo High Court and several district courts, including the bankruptcy chamber and commercial chamber of Tokyo District Court. In the bankruptcy chamber, he was a chief judge on several large and complex cases. During his period serving on these specialized chambers, he was also a visiting lecturer on civil procedure and practice at Keio Law School. At the Legal Training Institute (under the umbrella of the Supreme Court), in the new position of training officer, he created training programs for judges to prepare them for cases involving finance, economics and accounting. The training topics included corporate finance, structured finance, derivatives, intercompany behavior and accounting. He was seconded to the Ministry of Justice twice. The first time, as a government lawyer for administrative cases, handling cases forming the basis of state policy such as approvals for the construction of nuclear power plants and the reform of the election system and pension system. The second time, he was as a public prosecutor, where he helped establish a system for preventative legal services for governments and ministries. As the first director of the new team, he conducted research and established a knowledge base for the various international legal dispute settlement systems (ICJ, ITLOS, PCA) and for investment arbitration for potential future disputes.
