New Law on Electricity Promulgated by National Assembly of Vietnam

On 30 November 2024, Vietnam’s National Assembly adopted wide-ranging amendments to the Law on Electricity (“New Law”), which introduce significant changes aimed at modernizing and enhancing Vietnam’s energy sector. Certain notable features of the New Law are discussed below. Key policies in the New Law include provisions that are intended to promote the generation and use of renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and hydro power, along with the development of nuclear power. This legislation signals a clear shift toward a more sustainable energy portfolio in Vietnam in the coming years. The New Law introduces the first overarching rules on bidding for energy projects.
