The Yomiuri Shimbun - Defendant Liable in Tort for Unauthorized Use of Japanese Chess Match Data, First Ruling of its Kind
Nishimura & Asahi represented Yomiuri Shinbun, the most widely circulated newspaper in Japan, in its lawsuit seeking damages against a YouTuber. The case alleged that the YouTuber distributed videos online by using match data from the Japanese chess (shogi) championship without authorization. On May 21, 2025, the defendant was found liable in tort for the unauthorized use of shogi match data. This is the first-ever judicial decision of its kind from a Japanese court.
The team representing Yomiuri was led by partners Kenichi Minami and Kaedeko Takagi.
