Legal support for an asylum seeker resulting in recognition as a refugee by the Ministry of Justice
Leading Japanese law firm Nishimura & Asahi regularly provides pro bono legal support for asylum seekers seeking refugee status in Japan. In December 2023, one of the asylum seekers we provided legal support was granted refugee status.
We were involved in this case from the request for administrative review phase, which is the second stage of the refugee recognition procedure, and according to Immigration Services Agency data, the number of cases in which refugee status is granted at this stage is only 0.28% of the total requests for administrative review.
The Nishimura & Asahi team advising the asylum seekers was led by partner Takeshi Nemoto and Yuki Tashiro.
