Key Points of the Japanese CfD for Low-carbon Hydrogen (I)
– Comparison with the Round1 CfD for Green Hydrogen in the UK –
The Hydrogen Society Promotion Act was promulgated in May 2024, and establishes a legal foundation for the use of low-carbon hydrogen for green transition (“GX”) in Japan. The Act introduces a Contract for Difference (“CfD”)-type subsidy for the supply of low-carbon hydrogen, which then-Prime Minister Kishida clearly stated in an interview, and which, like the Feed-In Tariff system for renewable energy, effectively enables the introduction of low-carbon hydrogen. The author has worked on a project using the UK's CfD for green hydrogen supply, which was introduced earlier, and this article explains the key points of the Japanese version of CfD through a comparison of the UK and Japan versions.
