No 1: Key Characteristics of Internal Misconduct in Vietnam and Practical Tips for Initial Responses

Vietnam’s stable economic growth and pro-Japan public sentiment make it an extremely attractive investment destination for Japanese companies. However, companies also face the harsh reality that employee misconduct may occur at local subsidiaries in Vietnam. In fact, misconduct on the scale of hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars has been uncovered in a number of cases involving Japanese-affiliated companies, significantly damaging corporate value and undermining trust. In this issue, we first summarize several trends that are characteristic of misconduct in Vietnam, and then explain practical points to keep in mind when formulating and implementing initial responses to suspected misconduct. Tuan Anh joined our firm in August 2015 after spending approximately seven years practicing law at local firms, which included one of the first-tier local law firms in Vietnam.
